He missed all the build up, and came to when everything had already gone to pot. Which makes sense, especially for a serialised TV show. People might've taken less kindly to a series that slowly built up a zombie apocalypse, even though the slow burn drama is kind of what The Walking Dead is all about. Now the show has accumulated such a huge number of fans, though, they feel safe in telling the story of those early weeks. That's kind of interesting.
