The Flash series seems to be taking a lot from the source material judging by what was shown in the trailer, which is another reason why fans have been so receptive. The Flash is one of the lighter, more fun science-fiction-infused titles in DCs library and it seems the series plans to retain much of that. The trailer features a lot of typical sci-fi motifs found in superhero comics, but theres one aspect in particular that shows The Flash is taking more from the comics than most people expected. It shouldnt come too much of a surprise, though, as this was hinted at in Arrows episode The Scientist. When Barry told his backstory explaining why he chose to become a forensic scientist and was so interested in unexplained phenomena, fans were told of the strange manner in which his mother had been murdered. This tragic and bizarre story was glimpsed in the trailer, more than hinting at the appearance of Dr. Eobard Thawne, aka Professor Zoom or Reverse-Flash, a time-traveller obsessed with The Flash and has many of the same powers Flash has, except he can also travel through time. In the comics Thawne travelled back in time to kill Barrys mother, thereby setting in motion Barrys path to become The Flash as well as Thawnes own existence as Reverse-Flash, creating a rather complex time paradox. Its a bit of a surprise to see this origin story be adapted in the show since it is a very recent addition to The Flash mythology, not to mention one of the crazier elements in it. Either way, it's encouraging that the showrunners are pulling so much from the source material.
