6. What's Elena's Story?
At first glance it looked as though Spanish waitress Elena was only in the show to either A) be the makeweight in the crumbling marriage between Frank and Jules, or B) the story's go to for a bit of sex appeal. However as the story has progressed she's become an increasingly interesting character. First, her little exchange with the sheriff offers us some intriguing insights. "Has anyone in Fortitude spoken to you about the incident or given you reason to believe they may have learned about the incident?" he asks her before getting a short and definitive "No". The rest of the conversation moves on to her not being allowed to leave the town without notifying the police, before being asked is she's seeing anyone. Later, the Sheriff goes to knock on her bedroom door at the hotel, unaware that she's stood on the other side with a rifle pointed at anyone who might walk in. Of all the intriguing combinations in the town, Dan and Elena look simultaneously the most sinister and the most combustable. "Everyone here is running away from something", she tells Morton, and it's a fair bet that the as yet unexplained "incident" is her reason.
