9. Gaius Charles (Smash Williams)
Gaius Charles’ Smash Williams is one of the most distinctive characters in the first few seasons of FNL, a brash, arrogant running back who can match his cocky chat with incredible on-field skills. Charles steps aside midway through the show’s run, but leaves a mark on the series, and is given one of the happiest endings.
Following his departure, Charles quickly won a regular role on another hugely successful series, Grey’s Anatomy. As Dr Shane Ross, he enjoyed a two season run in a prominent position on the astonishingly resilient medical drama.
Perhaps more interesting is his role in Acquarius, the David Duchovny-starring Manson Family drama. Charles plays Bunchy Carter, a high up member of the Black Panthers. It’s a role steeped in history, and one Charles brings a great deal to, utilising his intensity and energy for the choice role.
Charles is also an accomplished theatre actor, having worked alongside the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in a production of Othello since leaving FNL, and has continued to gain strong notices for his stage work.
