Of all the huge American sitcoms, one of the most popular genres of television in recent years, they don't come much bigger than Friends and How I Met Your Mother. The former dominated screens from 1994 to 2004, and the latter took over in 2005, running until 2014.

Both shows follow a group of friends living in New York City, and even the dynamic of the two groups is incredibly similar. There are the established couples, Monica and Chandler, and Marshall and Lily, the will they, won't they love stories of Ross and Rachel, and Ted and Robin, and of course, the single womanizers, Joey Tribbiani, and Barney Stinson.

While both toyed with real relationships throughout their time, they spent most of their lives single and in pursuit of as many female companions as possible. While Joey relied on his looks and charm, Barney took pleasure in creating the most elaborate and ridiculous ways of finding a partner for the night.
