Futurama: 10 Most Underrated Episodes
5. Near-Death Wish
There are many things that can contribute to making a Futurama episode great. There's the humour, an instantly classic one off character or two, and the kind of genuinely emotional moment that sets the show apart from the rest of its animated competition. 'Near-Death Wish' has all of the above.
With Fry getting angry at the Professor's lack of love and support, he goes to visit the two other 'living' relatives he didn't know they had. Seeing the man from the year 2000 hang out with what is essentially his grandparents is wonderfully pure and wholesome.
The other side of this coin is the Professor's strained relationship with his mom and dad, and the hilarious reveal that Hubert was in fact the crazy brother. This was reminiscent of Bart being the evil twin in The Simpsons rather than Hugo.
Towards the end of Futurama's run, the Professor-centric episodes grew to be rather hit or miss, but this is certainly the former. As his surprising backstory is told, he gets to spend some time with his parents in their younger bodies as he was never able to before, and even Zoidberg manages to chime in with a couple of the best one liners in the episode.
