Imagine being the one person solely responsible for global warming. Thanks to his incredibly environmentally unfriendly robot design, that would eventually be used all across the world, this was Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth.

By sacrificing fuel efficiency, the Professor was able to create the sportier robot design Mom was asking for, and though he knew the risks to the environment thanks to flaming burps and such, he still proceeded with the design. With a bit more time and effort, he could have created a cleaner robot that didn't produce such greenhouse gasses, but he was in love.

For hundreds of years, the effects the robots had on Earth's atmosphere were fought off by dropping a giant ice cube in the ocean, but when Halley's Comet ran out of ice, the planet was thrown into genuine threat. The polar ice caps melted, and people burst into flames as the heat became intolerable.

Though it was the Professor and his robots that ultimately fixed the problem by pushing the Earth further from the sun, this is the epitome of a desperate measure, called for by the desperate times that were ultimately his fault.
