If Amy presented some outdated views on female characters, then Leela worked hard to go in the opposite direction. Turanga Leela is a powerful ally to have in the cruel world of tomorrow, as she acts as a fearsome captain who can deal well with pressure, and kick plenty of alien butt.

The legendary Katey Segal plays the voice of Leela and allows for her to have this mature identity that often plays into dry and rude humour. Her comedy is incredibly strong as she has a stoic presence within the show, meaning she greatly contrasts the majority of the energy emitted by the other members of Planet Express. Her more grounded stance makes her not only credible as a hard-worker but means that her outbreaks into outlandish territory often feel more earned.

However, a lot of the emotional core of the show came from its ability to play into drama, and Leela certainly did this excellently. Although she was presented to be a no-nonsense individual, she was also incredibly honest and vulnerable at times, leading to some of the show's most beautiful and poignant moments.

One of the biggest highlights for the character - and the cartoon in general - has to be her parenthood storyline, which sees her finally meet her birth parents and will have you quickly shedding a tear.
