Not all Starks were entirely honourable...

Throughout Game of Thrones, the audience is led to believe that the Starks are the moral core of Westeros.

While the family may not be Westeros's brightest bunch, what they lack in smarts they make up for in honour. Many of the poor choices made by each of the shows Starks come from wanting to do the right thing with often disastrous results. Their moral high ground often infects many of those around them including Catelyn, Jon, and Theon who take Ned's teachings to the grave (and back in some cases).

Sansa and Arya both learn the hard way that the old methods just won't cut it in the new political climate.

However, the top dogs of the seven kingdoms have not always been such outstanding rulers. Some of Westeros's shadiest history comes straight from the wolf's mouth from causing a thousand-year war to ensuring peace can never be an option.

They say the north remembers, but the north chose to forget these horrific acts by House Stark.

In order to win a crucial victory against the Lannisters, Robb Stark made the decision to sacrifice 2,000 loyal bannermen.

After gaining safe passage through the Twins from Walder Frey, Robb begins laying plans on how best to invade the south. Knowing full well that a direct confrontation with the legendary Tywin Lannister would prove futile, Robb instead chooses to direct his forces at Jaime. While Tywin protected the Kingsroad from northern attacks, his son was sent to pillage the Riverlands.

In order to not gain suspicion, 2,000 men were chosen to march against a 30,000 strong defense. The Northmen didn't stand a chance and Robb Stark knew that. In what was to be known as the Battle of the Green Fork, leaving the northern forces decimated.

Instead, Jaime was captured alive during the Battle in the Whispering Wood. After the battle, Robb does show some remorse of what he had done but Catelyn reassures him that he did the right thing.
