Pretty much all of the direwolves were underserved in this show. Remember in that very first episode when the Starks found the pups? That was an exciting moment, it foreshadowed just how integral they would be for the development of the Stark children. But sadly that wasn't to be.

In a nonsensical call-back to a plotline long since discarded, we saw the return of Nymeria. Throughout earlier seasons there had been rumours of a giant wolf roaming the Seven Kingdoms. It was a nice metaphor that symbolised the Stark cause as having some life left in it. So, when we saw Nymeria rock up we thought this must have significance for later episodes. Wrong again, the wasted scene resulted in a confusing moment between Arya and her former pet before they both parted ways.

In an attempt to distract from the subpar writing, the episode ended in another fight scene. Euron turned up to kill the Sand Snakes and capture Yara. Again, it was visually impressive but by this time the Sand Snakes had petered out into nothing characters, so the emotional impact was void. They could have been some of the most interesting players in the show. However, lazy writing made them feel like cheap caricatures of what some nerd in a writing room thought strong women ought to be like.

It was a poor ending for some poorly written characters.
