Game Of Thrones: 10 Most Underrated Heroes

5. Mance Rayder

Game of Thrones Yoren Arya
HBO

The 'King Beyond the Wall' and celebrated hero of the Wildlings, Mance arrived on our screens in season three and did not disappoint.

Our initial opinions of Mance are shaped from tales told by bitter members of the Night's Watch. They despise him for betraying them and breaking his vows of honour. Combine with this their constant quarrels with his army of Wildlings, and it is easy to see why they would slate him at every opportunity.

It is only when you meet the man and hear the other side of the story that you understand how great he is. He united over 90 clans under one banner for the first time. A feat even more incredible when you realise they elected him to lead out of choice. Mance was adored by his people, and he loved them back. He had no interest in fighting the Crows, he just wanted to lead his people to safety.

What a stand-up guy!

His death comes at the hands of Stannis. After bravely refusing to take the knee, he is subsequently sentenced to death by fire. Mance faces the flames with his honour intact; Jon ends his suffering with an arrow to the heart. A hero till the end.
