Besides the mind blowing climax to this particular episode, the build up contained some brilliant scenes that were indicative of the satisfying writing during season four.

This was when the show was at its pinnacle. The tension that had been building for three seasons, finally boiled over when Jorah was revealed as a spy, causing a season long rift between him and Dany.

Fans also saw Yigritte help the wildlings burn and murder their way through Moletown, adding further conflict between her and Jon.

And then in classic Thrones style they robbed us of another much loved character. Just as we thought Tyrion would be cleared of his charges and some justice might finally be served in Kings Landing, The Mountain crushed that hope, along with Oberyn's skull.

The death of the swaggering, sexually liberated and ever cool Oberyn Martell was one of the last good things the writers did with the Dornish characters. Sure, none of us wanted Oberyn to go out that way, but the rest of the Dornish plot lines were so pitifully underserved in later seasons that this ended up being as good as it got for them. Ouch.
