Game Of Thrones: 10 Theories That Turned Out To Be Bulls*it
5. Daenerys Goes To Asshai
"To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow." Quaithe's prophecy to Dany leaves some room for speculation and interpretation, but one popular theory is that it means in order to reach Westeros she will have to journey to Asshai and beyond. The city is located in the far South-East of Essos, much farther than the books or show have journeyed so far, and travelling in that direction would fit with the first two parts of the prophecy. The most pertinent part is the last though, as Asshai lies in the Shadow Lands, and is often called Asshai-by-the-Shadow, and to go to Asshai is to 'pass beneath the shadow'. While it does strongly seem to indicate Dany going there, it wouldn't make much sense, as going via the Narrow Sea is a much more direct route to Westeros, while the Shadow Lands and beyond would be largely unknown, potentially dangerous territory that would take far longer to navigate. Martin himself has said that he doesn't envisage the series ever going there, and if it does it'll be through flashback or memory, which would presumably be from Melisandre. There's also a theory that Daenerys is going to actually make it to Westeros at some point. It hasn't been completely debunked yet, but still... good one!
