Game Of Thrones: 10 Theories That Turned Out To Be Bulls*it

4. The Lannisters Killed Jon Arryn

Ok, this one was actually something the characters were led to believe as much as the reader/audience, but it is still one people really bought into, and led to theorising as to exactly who ordered the killing of Jon Arryn and why. It was evident that he had learnt the secret of Robert's bastards and the true parentage of his 'true-born' heirs, so it was easy to imagine that Jaime, Cersei, or Tywin was the one behind his murder. It seemed a small event at the time, but was actually the catalyst for much of the entire saga, as it led towards Ned Stark discovering the truth, alerting Stannis to the fact, and paying the ultimate price for it, while the War of the Five Kings stemmed from this information and new claimants to the Iron Throne. There hadn't been any reason to doubt it was a Lannister, with Cersei and Tywin the most likely suspects, but later in the series it was revealed that it was actually his own wife, Lysa, who had poisoned him. Behind it all though was Littlefinger, so often the man in the background pulling the strings, and this showed that right from the beginning he'd been playing everyone in order to cause chaos and allow himself to ascend up the ladder.
