Game Of Thrones: 10 Theories That Turned Out To Be Bulls*it
3. Tywin Killed Joffrey
Joffrey's death came slightly out of nowhere in A Storm Of Swords; one moment he's enjoying his wedding and poking fun at his uncle, the next he's turning a rather horrid shade of purple and slowly dying, a death that everyone wanted to happen but few actually expected would, at least not so soon. While Tyrion was instantly pinned as suspect number one by Cersei, there was some fervant fan speculation as to who the actual murderer was, throwing up one name that was particularly interesting. Would Tywin really go as far as to murder not just the King, but a King who is his own grandson? He has shown he's willing to go to drastic lengths to protect the reputation of his family and do what he can to preserve their power, and he obviously knows that Joffrey is unstable and needs to be taken in hand. If he felt that he was just another Mad King waiting-to-happen, then it's not totally beyond belief he would do something about it, either directly or conspiring with others. However, the true killer was later revealed to be the Queen of Thorns, Lady Olenna, with a little help from the shadowy puppet master that is Littlefinger. Given everything we know about the pair, it makes sense that they would be the ones to kill Joffrey, and although it is never explicitly stated Tywin wasn't involved, it's the kind of thing you'd think would've been addressed by now. It's difficult to imagine he would work so closely with Littlefinger and Olenna, and harder still to imagine they would have him killed by Tywin without the fact ever coming to light.
