2. Barristan Selmy's Early Demise

Even Ian McElhinney was shocked to find out his character, Ser Barristan Selmy, would be killed off in season five. Cut down by the Sons of the Harpy, Barristan's end was heroic but it came far too soon for viewers liking.

And for good reason. Barristan had a much larger role to play in the story. Although the show skimmed over the Battle of Meereen, it's a far larger affair in the books, and is far from over. As it stands, Dany is still lost in the Dothraki Sea. Meereen is under the rule of Selmy and a number of non-show characters, who are desperately trying to hold the city together.

A vast slaver army has laid siege to the city, leaving Barristan no choice but to lead a desperate counter-attack. In the teased chapters released from the upcoming book, The Winds of Winter, Barristan leads a force outside the walls to do battle. As the fight intensifies a fleet of Iron Born appear, and to everyones surprise lend a hand in fighting off the Slavers.

It's unlikely Dany will return in time to save the day, and Selmy will likely be the one to claim victory. He will then have the task of treating with the Iron Born - who happen to have a magic horn that can control dragons...
