When Robert Baratheon's rebellion against the Mad King was coming to an end, Tywin Lannister joined his future son-in-law (once he was certain this would be the winning side). Aerys' former Hand made his way from Casterly Rock to King's Landing and sacked the capital while his son earned the moniker, Kingslayer.

With the Targaryen's defeated and Robert on the throne, it fell to those who served the Mad King to prove their loyalty to the new king. Tywin Lannister chose to do this with a gift. The Lord of Casterly Rock presented to Robert, wrapped in the crimson cloaks of House Lannister, the corpses of Rhaenys and Aegon Targaryen.

With Viserys and Daenerys fled across the Narrow Sea, Rhaegar's children represented the last Targaryen blood the new regime could get their hands on. At the command of Tywin Lannister, Ser Gregor Clegane dashed both infants' heads against a stone wall, crushing their skulls.

This murder of two helpless, innocent children also sparked a divide between the crown and the Martells of Dorne. While the children were Targaryen, their mother Elia Martell was the Prince of Dorne's brother. In the books, this leads to a secret pact to marry Arianne Martell to Viserys Targaryen, losing King's Landing the support of one of the strongest houses in all of Westeros.
