From the very first scene of Game of Thrones, the threat of the white walkers was ever present (with the exception of the final three episodes). Once Jon had dispatched of Ramsay Snow and rallied the north together under one banner, he turned his attention back to north of the Wall.

Knowing what was coming, the new King in the North began the virtually impossible task of uniting the rest of Westeros under the banner of the living. He managed to sway Daenerys, but Cersei proved a much harder nut to crack. Men risked their lives going north of the Wall in order to bring back proof of walking ice zombies, losing a dragon to the dead in the process.

At the end of season seven, after seeing what Jon and co. brought south with them, Cersei agreed to put the war for the Iron Throne aside and send her forces north. This however, was just a ploy to buy herself time in her battle with Daenerys.

Staying exactly where she was and offering no help at the Battle of Winterfell could have, and should have, condemned everyone in the country to death. This was incredibly short sighted by Cersei, as the move would have bought her only a short time as Queen before the walkers eventually reached King's Landing.
