While Season 1 did a lot of heavy lifting with regards to world-building and introducing us to a dizzying amount of characters, Season 2 has a similarly difficult task in that regard. After 10 episodes where we've only just gotten used to who everyone is and learned to remember all their names, it throws another batch into the mix, many of whom become very important over the next few seasons.

A brief rundown of characters first introduced in Season 2: Stannis, Davos, Melisandre; Margaery, Loras, Brienne; Yara, Balon; Craster, Gilly, Dolorous Edd, Ygritte; Roose Bolton; Podrick Payne. That's not even everyone.

A fair few of those are now dead, but they all played an important part in helping shape the storyline over Season 2 and beyond. With them came a number of new locations too, whether it was the halls of Dragonstone or the snowy vistas beyond the Wall. These settings and characters are part of the fabric of the show now, so much so it's easy to forget it was the second season they entered the fray.
