Game of Thrones has a lot of great seasons but, rewatching Season 4 with added context of another three seasons following it and one more to come, it still clearly stands out as the benchmark for the show. 4 is often the magic number for dramas (think Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Wire, The Americans and so on), and Thrones is no exception.

Everything this season is working towards the culmination of the entire series up to that point. It has truly game-changing deaths - killing Tywin has more impact on the Seven Kingdoms than Robb and Catelyn Stark, for example - and astonishing spectacle, there's an incredible amount of political scheming and backstabbing, and there are some major character arcs that get better developed than ever before.

The Mountain v The Viper is one of the best fight sequences Thrones has ever done, and yet it's arguably bettered just two episodes later by Brienne and the Hound. The story from Joffrey's death to Tyrion killing Tywin is among the strongest storylines in the whole series. The Starks are all pushed forward in exciting ways. Daenerys is learning to rule. Everything coalesces brilliantly, and there's no season that can top it.
