In the latest episode, Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken, we get to see the wedding of Ramsay Bolton and Sansa Stark, which plays out as gloomily as you’d imagine. We then get to see the wedding night, which is where the problems and complaints have stemmed.

With Ramsay and Sansa back in their chambers, along with Theon/Reek, the former bastard questions his new wife as to her virginity, which she confirms. The scene then plays out as we suspected it might, but really hoped it wouldn’t, as Ramsay rapes Sansa. There’s no hidden weapon, no heroic rescue from Theon, no sudden arrival from Brienne to save the day.

It’s sparked a huge amount of controversy, debate and outrage online, with one website declaring they’ll no longer be covering the show.

While rape within the world of Ice and Fire may not be treated as that serious of a crime, it is understandable that concerns would arise given this is the third major female character we’ve seen suffer it, especially as up until this point the show had been slowly developing Sansa’s character into one who could be a potential bad-ass when it comes to playing the game. Hopefully we’ll see consequences from this one, and Sansa will get the revenge she deserves, lest it become ‘just another’ rape on Game of Thrones.
