Game Of Thrones: 15 Moments That Pissed Off The Fans

12. The Red Viper Vs. The Mountain

Prince Oberyn Martell swept into King’s Landing at the beginning of Season 4 like the personification of wildfire; his reputation as a fighter only exceeded by that as a lover. His charms soon won over the audience, as he became established as a fan-favourite almost straightaway. Obviously this wasn’t going to end well.

Defending Tyrion during his trial by combat, and doing his very best Inigo Montoya impression (“You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children!”), he got the upper hand over Gregor Clegane. After bringing down The Mountain, rather than finish the job, he took the time for one last verbal assault (“You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children!”) in order to force a confession, which he duly received just before Clegane made his eyes pop and crushed his skull.

Book readers knew it was coming, but it played out in a more shocking and bloody manner on screen, and viewers were stunned, saddened, and angry at having to say goodbye to one of the best characters the show had introduced right when it looked as though he was in total control.
