As the Night King breached the Wall and marched on Westeros, the dead slowly made their way toward Winterfell. With the living fighting against the odds, the protection of the castle walls and the people within was paramount.

However, the leader of the dead had the amazing gift of being able to bring the dead back to life, something he used to devastating effect at the Battle of Hardhome, and many more times throughout history.

When the Battle of Winterfell was on the brink, it seemed likely that, with the Night King being kept outside of the castle, he could raise the dozens of dead Starks laid to rest in the crypts below and expand his army from within. This would have been nothing those inside the castle could have prepared for, and would have added another, terrifying level to the fight.

This theory gained traction even during the battle itself, as the army of the living had the idea of putting the women and children down with the dead for their own protection. Just imagine seeing Jon Snow having to cross swords with the reanimated bones of Ned Stark, the bones they had to fight so hard to bring back home. This could have been the last in a string of mistakes Tyrion seemed to make over the course of his time as Hand of the Queen.
