She may have been one of the most evil characters the show had, but Cersei's one redeeming factor was the love she had for her family. Everything she did, she did for the good of the Lannister name, and the legacy of her house. As the show was coming to its conclusion however, all three of her children were dead, leaving no one to take the throne after she was gone.

In season seven, she revealed almost out of the blue that she was with child, but it happened so suddenly and at such a convenient time for her, that fans believed there must be another angle to it. Just as Jaime was pulling himself further away from her, she had the exact news that would keep him loyal to his sister.

With Cersei Lannister certainly not being above lying about a pregnancy, there was a theory that she simply fabricated the story, using the lie to manipulate Jaime into staying with her. Since there was never any true evidence of her pregnancy, with it going unconfirmed by any maester, fans were certain her lie would be uncovered, ultimately driving Jaime away from Cersei, and possibly into the arms of Brienne.

Though Cersei died before beginning to show signs of carrying a child, it would seem that this was one of the few times she was simply being honest, telling Jaime she was pregnant because she was actually pregnant.
