Game Of Thrones: 20 Awesome Characters Who Were TOTALLY Screwed Over
3. Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) was a great character for most of the show's run. Her story-lines were hit-or-miss, but in fairness they were always going to be hard to translate from the books since those story-lines were exceptionally complicated.
The reason why she was so good is because her growth from season to season was so satisfying and, better still, she was so likeable. As such, her abruptly slaughtering thousands of innocent people for no clear reason (they posed no threat whatsoever to her) was a major lapse in judgement on the writers' part.
That's not to say that Daenerys' story couldn't have a tragic, mad queen ending, but it needed build-up and logic; this had neither. More than anything else, the massacre of King's Landing was just unpleasant rather than powerful and the reason for this is that it just didn't feel backed up by anything we'd seen prior to that.
Her death scene at Jon's hands was better, but this switch to villainy was nonsensical and the rest of the season was mainly her moping and trying to shag Jon.
What Should've Happened:
There was no build-up to the Mad Queen story, so let's throw that out immediately.
She deserved a heroic ending. For example, she could've decided that other things (such as the people she loved and the lives of King's Landing's citizens) were more important to her than the throne and had a sacrificial death while defeating either Cersei or the Night King.
