Game Of Thrones: 25 Key Details You Need To Know & Remember For Season 8

10. Azor Ahai/The Prince That Was Promised

Stannis Baratheon Melisandre
HBO

After the long summer, darkness will fall heavy on the world. Stars will bleed.… The cold breath of winter will freeze the seas.… And the dead shall rise in the north.… A warrior will draw a burning sword from the fire, and that sword shall be Lightbringer

Call it Azor Ahai or The Prince That Was Promised, the idea is largely the same: a legendary warrior is going to come again to save the world from darkness. A lot of this comes from Melisandre, who so heavily believed that it was Stannis. Now, she mostly believes it's Jon, but that it could also be Daenerys instead.

We're definitely reaching the point where this prophecy should come to pass, if it's ever going to. The White Walkers are on the march, which means the dead have risen and winter is here. Now is the time for the prince to fulfil that promise.

The show has dropped some of the particulars about what criteria the person must meet - being born amidst smoke and salt, for example - but the idea of the flaming sword, Lightbringer, remains, as does that fact it's mostly hinted that this will be either Jon or Daenerys.
