Game Of Thrones: 4 Ups And 6 Downs From The Season Finale

9. Sam Heads To Oldtown - Up

Sam is sent to Oldtown by Jon at the beginning of A Feast For Crows, one of the two books adapted for this season, so when that didn't happen in the first few episodes it seemed like Dan Weiss and David Benioff were leaving it out entirely. Then there was a conversation between Sam and Stannis, where they discussed obsidian and the library at the Citadel, and it became more apparent that he would indeed be headed there, just a bit later than expected. It is Sam himself who decides that he needs to go and learn to be a Maester, and while Jon isn't particularly pleased about losing his friend, he recognises that it€™s something he needs to do and allows it. While it obviously helped pave the way for events later in the show, it also opens the door for even more expansion of Westeros as it means - all being well - Oldtown will be seen at some point next year. Randyll Tarly, Sam€™s father, and the rest of the family are set to appear then as well, so it seems that the Slayer will have a fairly major part to play in season 6, and he is one of the few who gets to end this run on a happy note as he rides off with Gilly.
