Game Of Thrones: 5 Great Characters Ruined By Poor Writing

3. Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion Lannister is George R.R. Martin’s favourite character, and it’s easy to see why. He’s witty, smart, and easily the most likeable member of House Lannister.

Peter Dinklage captured the brilliance of this character remarkably well and earned multiple awards for his performance. Indeed, Tyrion’s storyline in Season 4 (which involved him being falsely accused of Joffrey’s death and then having to flee King’s Landing) is a strong contender for the best part of the whole show.

Unsurprisingly, issues started to arise once the show ran out of source material. Specifically, Tyrion’s time as Hand of the Queen was not well-written. For one thing, it was strange just how quickly Daenerys was willing to give him such a prestigious position, and Tyrion wasn’t particularly successful with his new role. Thanks to his strategies, Yara’s fleet was destroyed and the Unsullied were trapped inside Casterly Rock.

In fairness, Tyrion did have some good scenes in the final season – such as his conversation with Sansa in the first episode. But just like Jon, he was also marginalised. Most frustratingly of all, he did next to nothing during the Battle of Winterfell despite having fought previously throughout the show.
