In the fifth season of Game of Thrones, Ser Jorah Mormont kidnaps Tyrion Lannister and attempts to bring him to Daenerys Targaryen to regain her favor. During their voyage to the Queen, Jorah and Tyrion go through the ruins of the ancient city of Valyria. As they sail past the dilapidated kingdom, Tyrion states the cautionary phrase that every sailor in Essos and Westeros swears by; "the Doom still runs Valyria".

Centuries before the start of Game of Thrones, Valyria was the most prominent city in the entire world. It was as populated as King's Landing, as culturally unique as Braavos, and as beautiful as Dorne. Valyria was the capital of the Valyrian Empire and the home to countless treasures. But the Doom consumed it all.

The city's entire population, culture, knowledge, and recorded history were destroyed in the Doom. The Doom of Valyria was utterly cataclysmic, and it changed the course of history forever. But the most unsettling aspect of the Doom is that it remains a mystery. No one knows for sure what exactly happened in Valyria on the day of the Doom.

The mysterious nature of the Doom has struck fear into even the most hardened men. Sailors refuse to even sail past the city. As far as they're concerned, the Doom still runs Valyria.

The city of Valyria and its enigmatic destruction is one of the many fascinating mysteries in Game of Thrones, and the topic is practically begging for deeper observation. A series set in Valyria during its early years could follow the influential people that helped make the city the prosperous capital it eventually became. And if there's one thing we've learned from Thrones, its that a lot of political decisions were made for selfish reasons. This spin-off would play like a grander version of the King's Landing politics. Various Littlefinger and Varys-esque politicians would lead this series, and their morals and motivations would vary. As these people work to grow Valyria, it will remain unclear whether their actions are done for the good of the realm or for their own benefit.

A Valyria spin-off would be an intriguing political thriller full of compelling characters. Watching a city gradually grow from the point of view of its various politicians would cause audiences to grow emotionally attached to the entire city. And when this series finally culminates in the catastrophic Doom, it would be an unique and emotional unravelling of one of Thrones' biggest mysteries.
