Game Of Thrones: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

22. A Golden Crown (S1E6)

Game Of Thrones Viserys Crown
HBO

The episode that had all fans of the show demanding to settle arguments via trial by combat, it also cemented Bronn's place in our hearts when he kicked Lysa Arryn's champion straight out of the Moon Door.

Even better than that, though, we get the double visual whammy of Daenerys eating a horse's heart, and then the death of Viserys - one of the series early villains - via molten gold, which even now remains one of the very best deaths on the show. Oh, and Ned Stark begins piecing together the truth about Robert and Cersei's children. That should work out well.

21. Mother's Mercy (S5E10)

Cersei Walk of Shame
HBO

Episode 9s get the hype, but the season finales are often among the very best episodes of Thrones. Season 5 may have been a weaker season, but the last three episodes are brilliant, and Mother's Mercy is an incredibly powerful hour of television.

The centrepiece is Cersei's Walk of Atonement, which is harrowing to watch but impossible to turn away from, and Lena Headey's face alone is worthy of winning Emmys, and makes us truly care for one of the show's more villainous characters.

Arya kills Meryn Trant in a gloriously bloody, horrible way, and is blinded as a result; Sansa and Theon take back control of their fates and escape Winterfell; and Myrcella's death in the arms of her uncle/father is surprisingly moving. Oh, and Jon Snow is killed "for the Watch." Shame, he seemed like he had a big future.
