Game Of Thrones: Every Hand Of The King, Ranked

4. Tyrion Lannister

Game Of Thrones Ned Stark Hand Of The King
HBO

It really feels like there ought to be two spots for Tyrion on this list. One higher placing for his time representing Tywin as Joffrey’s Hand, and another considerably lower for his role as Daenerys’ advisor.

Though Joffrey was impossible to tame, Tyrion tried ably and fights in his stead at Blackwater Bay. A political mastermind desperate for peace not power, he’s exactly the Hand Joffrey needed.

Aside from Varys though, nobody even acknowledges Tyrion’s work, much less praises him.

That’s what makes his time at Daenerys’ service that much more tragic. His good work is never appreciated in King’s Landing, and he’s moved almost to tears by Dany’s trust in him.

Unfortunately, the wit and poetry of the writing declines shortly after, and the pacing starts to scramble; both changes leave Tyrion a much less entertaining, rounded character and a much less fitting Hand.

He expertly played the whisperers of King’s Landing against each other, balanced the needs of the realm, masterminded Blackwater Bay and kept Joffrey in check. With Daenerys though, he seems to make mistakes at every turn.

Considering all eight seasons, there is some justice that he’s appointed Hand to Bran the Broken, even if his recent performances don’t warrant it.
