Game Of Thrones: Every Hand Of The King, Ranked

5. Cersei Lannister

Game Of Thrones Ned Stark Hand Of The King
HBO

Cersei was only a de facto hand to Tommen, but given Tommen’s complete lack of a spine, she arguably had the most influence of any Hand. Tywin (more on him later) tried to guide Tommen to be the best King he possibly could; Cersei was satisfied just to rule in her son’s stead.

During her time as Tommen’s hand, she was still reeling from the death of Joffrey and separation from Myrcella (who was later murdered too). Though the cracks in her psyche were beginning to show, she still attempted to do best for the realm.

However, all too often she was too distracted by short term gain and selfish ambition; she was a passionate and cut throat participant in the game of thrones, but she was never the most strategic.

The High Sparrow out manoeuvres her far too easily; it’s difficult to believe Tommen would’ve been such an impotent ruler had Tywin still been at his side.

Too much of her time was spent trying to prove - to herself, more than anyone - that she was fit for the job. Tywin never instilled the trust in her she felt she deserved; when she finally got power, it corrupted her almost immediately.
