A number of talented individuals were pitching to write the Game of Thrones spin-off, including Bryan Cogman, Carly Wray, Max Borenstein, and Brian Helgeland.

In the end, though, it's Jane Goldman who has won out, and that's terrific news for the spin-off.

Goldman's idea(s) must've been good, given they've been selected, and that decision alone is enough to inspire confidence, but even more so is her filmography. The writer of Stardust, Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and X-Men: Days of Future Past, Goldman has shown herself incredibly adept at writing big genre fare with lots of action, violence, gore, and humour. In other words, she should be a perfect fit for a Game of Thrones prequel.

Goldman's presence is also another reason the series should be very different from Game of Thrones. Women haven't been well-represented behind-the-scenes on the show, and having a female showrunner - and crucially one as talented as Goldman - ensures this will have a very different voice to the original series.
