Game Of Thrones: Ranking Every Season 6 Storyline From Worst To Best
9. The Siege Of Riverrun
Key Characters: Jaime Lannister, Bronn, Brienne of Tarth, Blackfish Tully, Edmure Tully
Best Moment: Jaime chats with Edmure Tully.
Worst Moment: The Blackfish killed off screen.
If nothing else, this acts as a terrific progression of Jaime Lannister. In earlier seasons, Jaime would have used Edmure Tully as a way to enter the castle, promptly kill him, then proceed to oversee the systematic murder of every Tully loyalist. The big wrench in the works here comes in the form of Brienne.
Ever since his storyline with Brienne, Jaime's loyalty has become much more complex. While wanting to uphold the Lannister name and remain loyal to his sister, there is also a sense of duty and respect drawing him to be loyal to Brienne, which is the only reason he ever entertained the idea of allowing a surrender.
Jaime provides a sturdy base for this storyline, but it is littered with far too many disappointments. Bronn, absent up until this point, is given very little to do. Although Jaime's strategy for retaking the castle was successful, the subsequent battle was over in a flash. Most egregiously, famed warrior Brynden "Blackfish" Tully is given an off-screen death, instead of nobly dying in battle. Effectively, this storyline is to Jaime what it is to the viewers: a distraction from far more important things.
In the long run, this serves to just give Jaime something to do and to explain Brienne's absence from the Battle of the Bastards. Other than that, the whole endeavor felt pointless.
