A few episodes back, Sansa wrote a letter to Littlefinger (although we never actually saw what it said, who it was to, or him receiving it, he was the only real candidate it could've been). That means that, as the battle has loomed and Jon has struggled for numbers, the prospect of the Vale's army has just hung in the background, an unspoken thing that seemed likely to play a part in the war to come.

As the battle dragged on, and we didn't spend anymore time with Sansa, it was becoming a question of when. At what point would they swoop in? Where the hell where they? Is it going to be too late?

Of course, they arrived at the exact moment defeat seemed inevitable. Littlefinger appeared alongside Sansa, the sigil of House Arryn flying proudly, and the Knights of the Vale rushed in and turned the tide of the battle. After being setup a number of episodes ago, it was good that it finally came to something, and it's nice that the Vale - so often overlooked, yet it was its former Lord's death that kickstarted this whole thing - got to play a significant part in things.
