So, hands up anyone who had Balon down as winning the War of the Five Kings...

Although the War of the Five Kings was a major driving force of the plot in the early seasons, and one of the biggest parts of Westeros history that's been portrayed on-screen, it's largely been forgotten about since Joffrey's death. That largely put a full stop next to it, but Stannis and Balon were still alive.

The former's death crossed the t's, and now Balon's has dotted the lower-case j's, meaning that the war everyone had moved on from has finally, officially ended, and Balon Greyjoy - a man not seen since Season 3 before this episode - was the last one standing. I suppose disappearing for three years helped in that regard.
