Game Of Thrones Season 6: All 10 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
1. The Winds Of Winter
This was never supposed to happen: after the high-point of the Battle Of The Bastards, the season finale should have been a more gentle tying up of remaining lose ends and some teases for the next season. Instead, we got a blood-bath, the rise of the Mad Queen, Melisandre's banishment, a new alliance with Dorne, Dany finally setting sail and Arya getting back to her kill list in style.
The episode is the crown jewel of a season built on a strong foundation of fan service: confirming R+L=J, reaffirming Arya's importance, making Ser Davos a bad-!*$% and setting up a penultimate season with Cersei on the Iron Throne. Obviously she's got a lot of enemies to fight (probably too many in fact), but her reign promises to be one of drama and darkness now she doesn't have her children's fates to be concerned about.
Like Hardhome and The Battle Of The Bastards, The Winds Of Winter was directed with true cinematic flair by the prodigiously talented Miguel Sapochnik. If he's not destined for more big screen work now it would be an absolute travesty, because his work here was just incredible.
The finale did everything required of it in narrative terms, tying up the arcs of the season and kicking off new ones, and it left the show - almost unthinkably - in a stronger position than it started. Who needs George RR Martin eh?
Best Moment: It's a very hard thing to pick, but Arya's murder of Walder Frey just about steals it.
