Game Of Thrones Season 7: 10 Quotes Which Foreshadow Big Things In Season 8
8. Melisandre: "I Have To Die In This Strange Country. Just Like You."
When Was It Said? Episode three: The Queen’s Justice
Varys questioned Melisandre’s absence at Jon Snow’s greeting party. The Red Priestess departed for Volantis, but not before warning ‘The Spider’ they will both die in Westeros.
What Does It Mean? Lady Melisandre has a sketchy track record as a sorcerer. Her prophecy that Stannis was The Prince That Was Promised sent him to his doom, but she did give birth to a shadow which killed Renley Baratheon, and brought Jon back from the dead.
Her prognostications should not be taken as gospel, but she had enough credibility in Varys’ eyes to give him a real fright when she darkly informed him of his upcoming demise.
Poor Varys still has nightmares of a voice in the flames which spoke to him on the night he was castrated. He is spooked by magic and Melisandre will know that. But this dialogue came out of nowhere and seems too random for it to be merely scaremongering. It almost certainly has substance, which means neither will make it through season eight alive.
Her trip to Volantis suggests that the Red Priestess and other followers of R’hllor will have a role to play in The Great War. Her role might be to die, according to her latest prophecy.
