Game Of Thrones Season 7: 12 Big Questions After 'The Queen's Justice'

8. What Has Melisandre Seen About Varys?

While Jon Snow is arriving on the shores of Dragonstone, greeted by Tyrion Lannister, two great schemers watch on from above. Varys and Melisandre don't partake in the welcoming party, but instead have their own key scene.

Varys should probably have learned this already, but run-ins with Red Priestesses don't tend to go well for him, and such is the case again here. Melisandre tells him that, although she's leaving, she will return to Westeros, because:

"I have to die in this strange country. Just like you."

What exactly does that mean? Is this Melisandre just trying to mess with the Spider, or assuming almost everyone will die in the Great War? Or does it run deeper? Has she seen Varys' death in the flames?

This speaks to his encounter with Kinvara, who told him about the voice he heard when he was castrated, which spoke words he didn't understand. Is Melisandre's foreshadowing connected to that at all, and part of a wider prophecy about Varys? He's always kept his cool and played the game well, but the Red Priestesses are the one thing that genuinely unnerve him, and maybe that's because they're so connected to not just his dark past, but also his grim future.
