Game Of Thrones Season 7: 30 WTF Moments

12. Dead Meat Doesn't Die

The whole of the Beyond The Wall episode is basically set up like an old school military men-on-a-mission movie, with expendable characters, cliched dialogue, irrepressible, insistent stereotypes and full-blooded action.

It's essentially set up like the Dirty Dozen, with the team overcoming their friction, establishing relationships, finding their place in the hierarchy of importance and hurtling towards a minor squirmish that then turns into an avalanche of drama as characters are killed off and heroes emerge. Everything went to plan, except for the characters who were DEFINITELY dead meat - Beric, Tormund and even Jorah - defying expectations, despite basically wearing the trope on their sleeves.

Jorah was the romantic sacrifice, Beric the Obi-Wan style sage, Tormund the "when I get home, I'll marry my girl" guy and yet all of them managed to live. It felt like a betrayal of the natural order.
