Heading into Season 7, with The Winds of Winter nowhere in sight, the agency of finishing this epic story had well and truly passed to the showrunners. That obviously still holds true, because barring a Beyonce-esque drop there's zero chance of two books coming out before Season 8, but the quality of the storytelling has put it back in Martin's hands.

He may not get there first, and at this stage it's a hope more than a guarantee that he'll get there at all. But with the TV series rushing past so many points in order to get to the endgame, there's also a great chance that the story will be much better served by George R.R. Martin. While Season 6 was pretty great, Season 7 has shown us how much the loss of Martin's novels as a guiding hand has cost the series. He can offer a better journey to the same destination, if he can ever write the thing, and it puts him back in a position of real strength and control rather than the subject of memes.
