Game Of Thrones Season 7: 8 Things You Might've Missed In 'Beyond The Wall'
7. Pride Vs Survival
The past few episodes have been repeatedly beating this particular drum, and it reaches a crescendo in Beyond The Wall.
We've had Daenerys telling Jon to bend the knee, and Jon refusing because of the Northerners - but it also recalled Tormund telling him that he spent too much time with the free folk to go kneeling.
It logically brings us to this, where the two of them have another conversation about kneeling, and Tormund - much to Jon's surprise - tells him to get over his pride and do what has to be done, discussing how pride cost Mance and the wildlings so many lives. It's the talk Jon needed to convince him to bend the knee, which he does at the end of this episode.
Tormund and Jon conversing also includes Tormund discussion how he's been south, as he's been to Winterfell. This is another callback to Ygritte, who once told Jon in A Clash of Kings: "Everything below the Wall’s south to us.”
It means a couple of references to Jon's former flame, which is fitting for an episode that a) sees him go beyond the wall, but also b) furthers the notion of Jon and Daenerys being a couple.
