9. What Else Will Sam Discover?

Sam only arrived at the Citadel in The Winds of Winter and now, with just 12 episodes remaining after this, it seems highly implausible for him to become a Maester and still play a part in the series' endgame.

So instead of earning his chains, he'll have to discover some crucial information. That's the big reason he's there, and it's what he is trying to achieve by gaining access to the restricted section.

Unfortunately, however, his big discovery here is one that - despite his excitement - we already knew. Viewers were long ago made aware of the fact that Dragonstone is sitting on the largest known pile of Dragonglass in Westeros, and Sam Tarly himself knew this (as he even alludes to here).

This is just the first episode though, so there will surely be bigger findings to come. Whether it's more about dragonglass, something on Valyrian steel, or something more overtly about the White Walkers themselves, Sam should be finding out something bigger than Dragonstone's obsidian stores in the coming weeks.
