Game Of Thrones Season 7: Ranking The Probability Of 13 Major Character Deaths In 'Beyond The Wall'
8. Viserion Or Rhaegal
The Case For
The ice dragon theory predates the TV series, originating from the notion of an ice dragon being its own separate entity. In more recent times, though, the prevalent idea hasn't been a dragon made of ice existing in the Wall (or other variations along those lines), but of one of Daenerys' dragons becoming the ice dragon - being killed and resurrected by the Night King. It's a very intriguing notion, and flips all of the 'three heads' stuff upside down, and again, if it's happening this year, this is the episode to do it.
There's been speculation Daenerys will fly North to save Jon et al, which puts the dragons at risk, and Viserion and Rhaegal are more expendable than Drogon, being smaller and given much less screen time. The shot above, one of the images released from the episode, at least confirms that dragons will be involved in some capacity, so there is some weight to the idea, and as previously mentioned, killing a dragon would really add to the White Walkers' power and ramp up the stakes. The show hasn't differentiated them much, but Viserion seems more likely to die than Rhaegal (purely based on name, really).
The Case Against
'The dragon has three heads' has felt like such a concrete part of the series' endgame for so long that it's hard to now imagine one of them actually dying and that not happening (but then, the show does love to subvert expectations). There's also the question of why Daenerys would fly North, and would either of these go with her. It's not like she'd have time to receive notice that they're in serious trouble, so it'd have to be her suddenly deciding to go North - which is plausible, since her and Tyrion are clearly having some important discussions based on the images, and aren't too happy about the current situation - and take two rider-less dragons with her, and then there's still the matter of how hard they are to kill.
