Jaime Lannister may have walked away from Cersei in the Season 7 finale, but she's the bad habit he can't fully shake. He's headed back to King's Landing, ostensibly because he's hateful like his sister and it's always been her.

While that is true, we shouldn't assume that Jaime's journey back to King's Landing is to simply be with his sister. His words to Brienne were surely designed to protect her, and that means Jaime knows this is likely to be a dangerous trip, and potentially a one-way trip as well. Even if Jaime isn't thinking about killing Cersei right now, he might have to when he meets her again.

Jaime, ultimately, will want to protect Cersei and their unborn child, but he'll also want to protect the people too. He'll do what he can to save Cersei from herself, and if his efforts fail, he might well be left with no choice but to kill her, which would fit with the tragedy of his arc. To loop back to the valonqar prophecy from the books, Jaime is the most likely candidate to fill that role. If the endgames are even just loosely matching up, then even without the prophecy the show could still be preparing to give him that moment. He's already a Kingslayer, and now he might have to be a Queenslayer too, with history repeating itself in the most tragic of ways.
