Game Of Thrones Season 8: 12 Things You Might've Missed In 'A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms'

11. Jenny's Song

Game of Thrones Podrick
HBO

Podrick gets a real moment to shine this week, as he treats us all to a ballad by the fireplace. The song in question is called Jenny of Oldstones, and known in the books as Jenny's song.

The song refers to Prince Duncan Targaryen, who was the heir to the Iron Throne before abdicating so that he could marry a strange peasant woman called Jenny, to the fury of the Baratheons (he was in a marriage pact with one of them) and the delight of the smallfolk.

Jenny was friends with a woods witch, who accompanied her to court and made the prophecy that The Prince That Was Promised would come from the line of Prince Aerys and Princess Rhaella, causing their father to marry them. Duncan's story ended in the Tragedy at Summerhall, where he and many others were killed in a great fire - an event which also bore witness to the birth of Rhaegar Targaryen, and is believed to be linked to trying to bring dragons back into the world.

It's a song about forbidden love, and about the ghosts of people who are gone. It's one with ties to The Prince That Was Promised. It's linked to Rhaegar and Lyanna's romance. And, of course, it is about all of us too.
