Game Of Thrones Season 8: 8 Criticisms Which Are Fully Unjustified

4. The Character Development Was Shallow

Characters doing what we did not expect or hope for them to do is not the result of bad writing. If anything, it's the opposite.

Jaime abandoned his plan to put Cersei in her place and instead held her in loving embrace. Sandor spent most of The Long Night hiding in fear. Daenerys took one of TV's most dastardly heel turns. Snow killed his queen.

Did we really know these people to begin with? Do we really know ourselves for that matter? The abandonment of principles in the face of fear greed or both is a very human trait and is the absolutely one of the coolest things writers can do to their characters in any format. Believe and trust in this: The unexpected actions of the characters in this final season was fully intentional, and it worked.

A perfectly linear narrative, ruined by the neurotic actions of people has always and forever been the name of the game in GOT, and it's the main reason why fans fell in love with the show in the first place. Remember The Red Wedding if you want clarification on this point.
