This was how it was always going to end.

As soon as Dany began to feel threatened by the very presence of the Starks in the Seven Kingdoms after the revelation of Jon's true parentage was revealed, there could only ever be one side of that battle that survived at the end.

Ultimately, it was Dany who paid the price for allowing herself to be poisoned by the corrupting lure of power (her arc in the final season was drawn in parallel to the tragedy of Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings narrative) and she made herself vulnerable through her actions.

When she threatened Jon's family, she gave Tyrion the launch point he needed to convince Jon that the unthinkable had to be done and in a mirror image of Jon grieving the death of Ygritte, his heart was ripped out once more for "the greater good" and he was forced to kill Dany as they embraced.

It may have come a little soon for some, but it was the perfect ending to how Dany's arc has gone this season.
