Game Of Thrones Season 8: Every Death Ranked Worst To Best

14. Qhono

Qhono Dead Game Of Thrones
HBO

The Dothraki's swift exit in the opening moments of the battle was a bit of a headscratcher and while we didn't see their leader Qhono (well, until he was usurped by Jorah) die on screen, his death did form part of one of the best moments in the episode. Instead of us seeing the cavalry (who you should never send into battle that way) fighting full-blooded with the wights, most of what we saw was restricted to long-distance shots showing their magical flaming swords.

Rather brilliantly, as quickly as they charged into battle, their lights began to be extinguished, leaving the audience to fill in the gaps and it was far more effective than actually showing us.

So while we didn't see Whono fall, for his part in this stunning sequence, he deserves praise. It really was a brilliantly creative moment in the episode and an incredibly bold way of avoiding the most obvious way of presenting the first battle contact.

They were a necessary casualty, unfortunately.

Well, mostly just that Dany's forces are now decimated. In order to make the drama of the battle with Cersei more interesting, Dany had to have her most valuable fighting assets stripped away or decimated heavily, and removing the Dothraki was a prerequisite.

13. Varys

Game Of Thrones Varys
HBO

Varys may have been a schemer responsible for lots of bad things - indirectly most of the time - and he may have tried to poison Dany, but he was proven right and his unfaltering commitment to the good of the realm made him one of the only truly "good" characters in the entire show. It also fit that in preservation of his goodness, he was very willing to be bad.

After dodging threats for some time without ever really breaking sweat, The Spider ultimately lost his life when Dany discovered his betrayal (and presumably his plotting to kill her) and put him "on trial." In reality, that meant telling him he was going to die and then cooking him by dragonfire.

It's fitting that he should meet the same end as the realm, actually, but it only loses points here because we didn't see it on screen. At least he didn't scream at all though. He's been through worse, after all.
