Game Of Thrones Season 8 Finale: 10 Ups And 3 Downs From 'The Iron Throne'

6. Daenerys' Demise

Game of Thrones Daenerys Jon Snow
HBO

After her actions in The Bells, where she slaughtered countless innocent people, there was never likely to be any coming back for Daenerys Targaryen. Her fate was sealed, her coin landed, when she decided that fear was the only way left for her to rule.

And so her hero's journey comes to an end in just about the most tragic way possible: as she is finally about to claim that which she has always wanted, that which she has fought and killed for, lost so much for, she's murdered by the man whom she loves.

For Daenerys, it's one final betrayal in a long line of them. For Jon, it's the ultimate act of putting duty above love. It's burning desire meeting an unmovable sense of what's right. It's ice and fire. From finally seeing Dany in the Throne Room, calling back to the House of the Undying, to her and Jon's final exchange, the reveal of what he's done to him cradling her in his arms like he did Ygritte, it's a stunning sequence, with a great performance from Emilia Clarke again, that's befitting of being the show's biggest death since Ned Stark lost his head
